21 July On Karma..."Karmanyevadhikar aste na faleshu kadachana"
Lord Krishna to Arjun
The Bhagwad Gita The reason why this topic is pertinent and worth writing upon is because everything is so intricately wound around karma- destiny, the purpose of being, the idea of life being pre-ordained, and what not. Thing is...I don't ordinarily think a lot. So, whenever I do end up thinking, I do too much of it. The idea is not to be profound, just to let off a little steam. I, for one, have always known that none of these questions possess an answer, but that in no way implies that they should not be asked. “People pay for what
they do, and still more, for what they have allowed themselves to become. And they pay for it simply: by the lives they
lead.”
— Edith Wharton
Here is the theory of karma in the simplest way possible (which happens to be the only way I understand it!): Do good, get good. Do bad...uh oh!! The types of karma, and not to mention the whole crap on afterlife is far beyond me. "God's court retains an account of all deeds."
Guru Nanak
The way I look at it and believe it, is that what happens to you in this life, depends on what you do right now. You will eventually end up paying (or getting paid) for everything. However, there are some fundamental flaws here: 1. I thought of this after reading a report in a newspaper some time back about a little girl 6 years old killed by a rod falling onto her head. About those kids who are raped/sodomised by sick and psychotic relatives/uncles, and often killed and dumped somewhere. How do these poor souls know about what they are doing, what do they know about good or bad? And if they have no karma, why do they face such a cruel fortune? 2. The babies who are born without arms/legs or other essential features. And those who inexplicably contract degenerative diseases and die even before they can comprehend what is happening to them. Dying a slow, painful death for no apparent reason? 3. The "good guys". By this I mean all those who actually show the gumption to go against the system and raise their voice. And usually end up getting the short end of the stick. Take the case of endless whistle blowers, honest cops and officers who have to go through whatever not because they decided to be honest. Decided to do what was right. They are pestered, at times killed. All this while the "bad guys" seemingly get away with it all. Maybe there are alternate explanations. Maybe there are none. Maybe life is simply as random as it seems. The question will be raised ad nauseum. Just one thing is certain. "Omnes una manet nox" Horace
The same night awaits us all.
What happens till then is inconsequential. What happens after is unknown. How then are our lives pertinent... Comments (1)
